Established on May 1, 1922, the University of Delhii stands as one of India's premier central universities. Founded as a unitary, teaching and residential institution, DU has consistently contributed to shaping the nation's intellectual and cultural landscape for over a century.

From three colleges in 1922 to India's premier University of Delhi, Delhi University continues to shape the nation's intellectual and cultural landscape
1922: Establishment
Delhi University established by Act of the Central Legislative Assembly as a unitary, teaching and residential university. Started with 3 constituent colleges, 2 faculties (Arts & Science), and 750 students under first Vice-Chancellor Hari Singh Gour.

1937-1950: Golden Era
Under Sir Maurice Gwyer, the university earned the title "Maker of the University." Introduction of postgraduate teaching, establishment of advanced laboratories, and a special convocation ceremony attended by PM Jawaharlal Nehru in 1948 during India's independence.

1960s-1970s: Campus Development
Expansion of academic departments and establishment of multiple affiliated colleges across Delhi. Development of comprehensive infrastructure including libraries, research centers, and student facilities. Golden jubilee celebrations in 1973 attended by PM Indira Gandhi and renowned artists.

1980s-1990s: Diversification
Introduction of interdisciplinary studies, computer science, and professional courses. Strengthened research capabilities with emphasis on biotechnology and environmental sciences. Establishment of Delhi University's presence as a recognized research institution nationally and internationally.
